Protecting children and the risk of online sexual abuse: what do we need to know?
The potential impact of online harm in the lives of children and young people across Scotland and the world is ever present. Concerns are widely shared and no more so than by those who have a responsibility to care for children and protect them. The increasing risk of online sexual abuse is a particular focus of calls for new legislation and action, so what do we need to know to prevent harm and support children and young people?
This webinar took a multi-agency look at what is happening as we heard from:
- A/Detective Superintendent Carron McKellar, Police Scotland
- Chris Hughes, the Internet Watch Foundation
- Stuart Allardyce, the Lucy Faithfull Foundation Scotland
In conversation with Claire Burns, Director of CELCIS, they discussed new risks, including from Artificial Intelligence (AI), and what is being done to take action on offending. There were also questions from attendees.

Police Scotland launch six-week campaign to prevent online child sexual abuse
Police Scotland launched their #GetHelpOrGetCaught campaign on 1 July 2024 targeting potential and existing offenders. The prevention campaign offers them a way to stop and a route out before they offend, before a child becomes their victim and before more lives are ruined. Watch the video here.
The campaign signposts them to the Stop It Now! Scotland website, run by the Lucy Faithfull Foundation (LFF), which offers anonymous and confidential support to prevent offending. LFF also offer advice, training and guidance for parents and carers, communities, and professionals in children’s services and criminal justice settings.
